In this paper the applicability of Artificial Intelligence for design automation of complex communication systems is evaluated. Based on an analysis of the design task a novel approach to assist system design at an early stage and at a high level of abstraction is presented. A knowledge-based design tool for the class of spread spectrum communication systems is described which has already been implemented as an experimental prototype at the University of Kaiserslautern. The concepts presented are very general and thus can be applied to various design problems in the engineering domain.
