When a Far-Infrared (FIR) Laser is designed with a ring-resonator instead of the conventional standing-wave-resonator, one expects two advantages: first, the ringlaser should deliver an output power with higher temporal stability, because no pump power is fed back into the pump oscillator; second, the ringlaser output is expected to be higher. Superior stability may be experimentally proven, whereas there appears to be no great difference between the output power obtainable by the different resonators, if one looks closer at the problem. Diffusion of molecules within the laser gas smoothes the spatial inhomogeneity of the inversion in a standing-wave resonator, which therefore uses the active medium with similar efficiency as a ringlaser. Furthermore approximate equivalence of both resonator-schemes is predicted by a simplifying large signal analysis, while more detailed calculations deliver a slight advantage for the ringlaser as a consequence of the different pump distributions.
