Contents

A method is presented for increasing the starting torque of capacitor-run split-phase induction machines by the application of a positive temperature coefficient (PTC) resistor which is permanently connected in parallel with the capacitor. The method is applicable to split-phase induction machines without the necessity of connecting a starting capacitor or a starting switch in series with the posistor. — The steady state equations are derived and expressions of the starting torque and starting current are presented. It is shown that optimum starting conditions can only be obtained if the posistor is matched and there is a region where the mismatched posistor reduces the starting torque.
