Abstract
Arguments in favour of a large value of the matrix element\(\left\langle {N\left| {\bar ss} \right|N} \right\rangle \) based on semiphenomenological data and low-energy theorems are given. As an application of these considerations, we study the contribution of strange quarks to the neutron electric dipole moment.
