Contents

Based on the sensitivity approach a new algorithm for optimal shape design has been presented in this paper. The Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) of the sensitivity matrix and the Least Distance Programming (LDP) [3] have been used in order to define a direction vector. —Two types of side constraints have been imposed to control the mathematical technique and to avoid undesirable shapes. — The algorithm is illustrated by its application to modify the magnetic pole contour so that a desired magnetic field distribution in the air gap is obtained.
