Ego defects in nonpsychotic adolescents

  • Published:
Psychiatric Quarterly Aims and scope Submit manuscript

Summary

The adolescent psychiatric patient must be considered on the basis of his ego maturity and integration and his relationship ability. There is a distinct group of adolescent patients who present a bizarre symptom pattern which is not psychotic but is reflective rather of their stunted ego growth. It is necessary to distinguish such patients because the total treatment program and eventual prognosis differs greatly with them as compared with schizophrenic patients or patients with established character disorders.
