Abstract

Between 1949 and 1969, mental disorder epidemiology matured from a speculative hope to an established variety of research capable of adding to knowledge about mental disorders.

Nevertheless, some of the early leads were not pursued vigorously enough, and so, in addition to reviewing progress, the author identifies five sets of problems which are worth intensive investigation in the years immediately ahead.
