Conclusions

  1. 1.

    In some cases associated somatic disease has a beneficial influence on manic-depressive reactions.

  2. 2.

    A great many theories have been proposed to explain this phenomenon, but no single theory is adequate.

  3. 3.

    The non-specificity of the curative agent raises the question whether the operation is similar to that of a shock reaction.
