Summary
This paper deals with a variety of issues involved in program evaluation and planning in a new community mental health service, the Washington Heights Community Service. The demographic and psychopathological characteristics of the hospitalized seriously ill on this service are described. The psychopathology of this group is compared with out-patients and non-patients from the same general community and their differentiating characteristics are delineated. These data have been used in the development of a hospital program involving in-patient, partial hospitalization and after-care and designed to meet the specific needs of this hospitalized population.
