Summary
The authors tested the culturing of micro-organisms from the circulating blood. “Liquoid” was used as an anticoagulant and to eleminate the inherent bactericidal factors.
-
1.
The growth of meningococci is considerably inhibited in the “Liquoidvenule” filled with 8 ml of the patient's blood. Inhibition of streptococci and staphylococci is probable, particularly if the “Liquoid”-concentration increases by filling it with less blood. Under identical test conditions the growth of the tested grampositive and gramnegative rods was not affected.
-
2.
The findings obtained at the Würzburg Institute of Hygiene cannot be compared to the blood culture statistics of other authors as a number of the prerequisites for statistic comparisons are absent.
On the basis of the test results the authors suggest decreasing the “Liquoid”-concentration in the “Liquoid-venules” to 0.25%, and they also suggest special incubation techniques.
