Abstract
We discuss a simple two-component description of the minimum bias data observed at the CERN\(\bar pp\) collider. We show how the “hard” scattering component can be extracted using a moment analysis of the multiplicity distributions measured by the UA 5 collaboration. This component is compared with QCD expectations obtained from convoluting parton-parton scattering with jet calculus predictions for the multiplicity distributions in jets. Encouraging overall agreement is achieved despite many theoretical uncertainties. Implications for the UA 1 jet/no-jet sample are discussed briefly.
