Abstract
A hepatoblastoma in a 2-year-old child was considered unresectable at exploratory laparotomy because of diffuse liver involvement. The treatment of the patient with intravenous 5-fluorouracil for 5 months resulted in a remarkable reduction in the size of the tumor so that it became resectable and was removed by right hepatic lobectomy. The child is alive and well 26 months after surgery. Several similar cases have been reported in which an unresectable hepatoblastoma was made resectable by chemotherapy, and operation was then followed by long-term survival without recurrence.
