Abstract

The American Joint Committee for Cancer Staging and End Results Reporting has developed a classification system for staging malignant melanoma. Based on the TNM classification system of the International Union Against Cancer, the American system uses information derived from over 1700 cases. Characteristics including level of invasion, thickness of penetration, nodal involvement, and incidence of metastases are considered and rules for classification are included.
