Production of interferon by monkey kidney cells infected with simian virus 40

  • Published:
Archiv für die gesamte Virusforschung Aims and scope Submit manuscript

Summary

Monkey kidney cell cultures infected with simian virus 40 (SV40) were found to produce a substance having inhibitory effect on the propagation of pseudorabies and poliomyelitis viruses. The inhibitor was classified as interferon as its properties and mode of action were consistent with this type of inhibitor. It is discussed whether interferon may play a part in the formation of tumors induced by viruses.
