Analysis of hadron production in deep inelastic muon-proton collisions through the fire-string model

Abstract

The systematic investigation of the experimental results on hadron production in deep-inelastic muon-proton collisions in terms of the fire-string model (started in a preceding work [1]) is completed with the examination of a large amount of recent data. The satisfactory general agreement between theory and experiment is confirmed, and the discussion of the discrepancies allows us to suggest a few relevant modifications in the formulation of the model. A prediction is made on the behaviour of the charm production rate.
