Infra red photodetachment threshold measurements: Li and P

Abstract

Photodetachment of Li and P is studied near low energy thresholds. A crossed beam apparatus is described in which a 3 keV negative ion beam is intersected by the infra red output of a laser pumped optical parametric oscillator. The threshold behaviour of the cross sections is studied. The electron affinities of LithiumEA (Li)=(0.6182 +0.0004−0.0006 ) eV and of Phosphorus EA(P)=(0.74676 +0.0003−0.0005 ) eV are determined. The spin orbit splitting of the3 P term of P is measured.
