Peak operation of a hydroelectric station as a factor in formation of backflow in a lateral tributary

Conclusions

Peak operation of an HES is capable of leading to formation of backflow in a tributary emptying into its lower pool. The flow characteristics (rate, duration) can be found from data on fluctuations in level with the use of the suggested schemes. As applied to the confluence of the Desna and Dnepr, we can conclude that in ordinary operating conditions of the Kiev HES it is practically impossible for Dnepr water to reach the existing or planned water intakes.
