Conclusions
-
1.
Inexpensive closed solid spherical shells of porcelain possessing a supporting capacity of 45–60 MPa with a relative weight of 0.42–0.6 may be produced by slush casting.
-
2.
As in shells of high-strength ceramic and glass, initial deviations from the ideal form have a significant influence on the supporting capacity of spherical shells of porcelain under the action of an all-sided external pressure. In shells characterized by initial deflections on the order of half of the wall thickness stresses equal to 70% of the compressive strength of the material in uniaxial compression tests of rod specimens may be realized under the action of external pressure.
-
3.
Shells with a diameter of not less than 550 mm possessing a supporting capacity of ∼60 MPa with a relative weight of 0.7 may be produced by plastic forming of a porcelain mixture.
-
4.
The development of methods for the production of ceramic shells with the minimum initial nonuniformities in form is one of the basic directions in increasing their technical characteristics.
