Summary
The flow induced by the rotation of a wavy rod is studied using the method of domain perturbations. Of particular interest is the motion in axial planes which enters at second order. These secondary motions are sensitive to changes in the geometric and material parameters. For some values of the parameters the flow is entirely dominated by inertia; for other values, by normal stresses. For still other values of the parameters the competition between inertia and normal stresses causes the flow field to split into two distinct regions with normal stresses dominant near the rod and inertia dominant far away from the rod. The problem treated may be regarded as a model for the flow induced by agitators and stirring rods. The predictions of the analysis are in qualitative agreement with the experiments ofWhite, Chankraiphon andIde (6).
