Summary

A simple expression has been derived which allows the Hamaker constant of nonpolar liquid-like materials to be calculated from a knowledge of the thermal expansion coefficient. This has been achieved by reformulating the well-known expression of Fowkes, using a surface-free energy function derived by Davis and Scriven and the corresponding states relationships of Prigogine. The resulting expression explicitely accounts for the effect of temperature and gives results which are in good agreement withA values obtained from optical dispersion data and from other corresponding states relationships.
