Conclusions

  1. 1.

The crack opening index is very structure-sensitive. It can be profitably used for testing small size test pieces to obtain comparative data on the susceptibility of anisotropic metals to brittle fracture.

  2. 2.

The heat affected zone of welded joints in steels 14Kh2GMR and 14KhMND FR cooled after the weld heat cycle at a rate of 2–50 deg/s and tested at temperatures between +20 and −80°C has a very low resistance to crack nucleation in the case of cracks growing in a direction parallel to the plate plane.

  3. 3.

The resistance of steel (in the heat affected zone) to crack nucleation and propagation in the direction of the plate plane can be increased by improving the initial properties of the metal with the aid of electroslag refining.
