Summary

The behaviour of a doublet formed from two attracting spheres in a laminar shear field has been investigated. It is found that the spheres in the doublet have a small relative movement, until the shear rate, at which the maximum hydrodynamic force exerted on the doublet is equal to the maximum interactive force between the particles, is approached. When, however, these two forces become equal the doublet is destroyed. The energy contribution to the disruption of a doublet by the movement of liquid in the gap between the doublet's spheres is about 30% of the total energy dissipated in the process.
