Summary
With a method, which has been derived recently [Kolloid-Z. u. Z. Polymere 199, 128 (1964)], the numbers of the molecules adsorbed by polystyrene in mixtures of different paraffins and alcohols with benzene were determined by approximation from light scattering and refraction index measurements. By means of these numbers we investigated the influence of the molecular shape and size of the paraffins and alcohols upon the adsorption on polystyrene. Thereby we got the result, that in mixtures of benzene with paraffins the adsorption of a paraffin with molecules of cyclical shape (cyclohexane) is stronger than the adsorption of a paraffin with molecules of equal size but linear shape (n-hexane). On the other hand we received in mixtures of benzene with alcohols, that the adsorption on polystyrene of an alcohol with cyclical molecules (cyclohexanol) is equal to the adsorption of an alcohol with linear molecules (l-hexanol). Furthermore we got the result, that in mixtures of benzene with n-paraffins as well as with primary linear alcohols the numbers of the adsorbed paraffin and alcohol molecules decrease with increasing molecular size and vanish when the size becomes infinite. This relationship between the number and the size of the adsorbed molecules we could describe quantitatively by means of the molecular weight of the paraffins and alcohols. A perceptible influence of the temperature upon the adsorption on polystyrene in all mixtures used, could not be established between 20 and 70 °C.
