Experimental evidence for an intermediate state of order in polymers

Summary

Optical diffraction techniques are used to study the validity of a two-phase model for the structure of fibres. It is shown that the existence of an intermediate state of order renders measurements of ‘percentage crystallinity’ invalid, and a paracrystalline structure for nylon is proposed.

Zusammenfassung

Die Technik der optischen Beugung wurde angewandt, um die Gültigkeit eines Zwei-Phasen-Modells für die Struktur von Fasern zu prüfen. Es läßt sich zeigen, daß die Existenz einer intermediären Ordnung die Messungen von prozentualer Kristallinität ungültig macht und daß eine parakristalline Struktur für Nylon vorzuschlagen ist.
