Summary
This paper presents a study of the peptisation of insoluble salts of groups I, II and IV metals by organic anions, the factors that determine the “peptising power” and peptisation ratio for different peptisors have been investigated in detail.
The peptisation depends on sol concentration, pH, and the nature of the metal salt anion, the structure of the peptising agent is the most important factor.
Peptisation generally occurs by weak chemisorption of the organic anion onto the surface of the sol particles through chelation with the cation of the metal salt, but steric effects may modify the stability of this “chelation”.
Maximum peptisation and stability occurs after adsorption of one to two monolayers of the peptisor, but addition of the equivalent of 2 to > 50 monolayers may be required to attain this. 24 hours stability is attained after adsorption of one quarter to one half that amount required to give maximum stability.
