Summary
It is difficult to use flow birefringence as a research tool in fluid mechanics, when the behaviour is depending on time and temperature like aqueous solutions of CMC. Strange phenomena sometimes appear, for example a kind of rejuvenation after heating. We may consider that the number of physical and chemical parameters is too large, perhaps due to the presence of long filaments which decline biologically and mechanically.
On the contrary, aMilling Yellow aqueous solution has the advantage of high birefringence and reliable results when prepared by reducing the size of the suspension elements; it is very limpid, allowing measurements with large thicknesses and giving a reversible behaviour when thermical stresses. However, the sharp aspect of the birefringence does not allow to neglect the physical and chemical phenomena.
