Approximate solutions for Poiseuille flow of liquid crystals

Summary

Approximate solutions are found for the orientation and volume flux in thePoiseuille flow of a nematic liquid crystal using the continuum theory proposed byLeslie. These approximate solutions agree well with numerical solutions. They also agree with some of the available experimental data and suggest a tentative explanation for anomalies in the remaining data.

Zusammenfassung

Wir finden in dieser Arbeit Näherungs-Lösungen für die Orientierung und den Volumenfluß in einerPoiseuille-Strömung von nematischen flüssigen Kristallen, unter Benützung der Kontinuumstheorie vonLeslie. Diese Lösungen stimmen mit numerischen Lösungen überein. Sie stimmen auch mit verschiedenen vorhandenen experimentellen Resultaten überein und schlagen eine versuchsweise Erklärung für die Anomalien in den übrigbleibenden Resultaten vor.
