A quantitative study of orthokinetic flocculation in suspensions

Summary

A theoretical study of orthokinetic flocculation in suspensions is presented. Mathematical derivations suggest that an exponential distribution of non-flocculated particles exists for any heighth in a suspension. Deviations in the sediment weight as a function of concentration or the total weight of the solid phase are represented by

$$\Delta P_i = A_1 P^2 - A_2 P^3 + A_3 P^4 - \ldots$$

The experimental results are in fair agreement with theoretical conclusions.

Zusammenfassung

Bei einer theoretischen Studie der orthokinetischen Flockung in Suspensionen kommen mathematische Ableitungen zu dem Ergebnis, daß für jede Höhe in der Suspension eine Exponentialverteilung der nicht ausgeflockten Partikeln existiert. Abweichungen des Sedimentationsgewichts als Funktion der Konzentration des Gesamtgewichts der festen Phase werden durch

$$P_i = A_1 P^2 - A_2 P^3 + A_3 P^4 - \ldots$$

dargestellt. Die experimentellen Ergebnisse stimmen mit den theoretischen Ergebnissen in befriedigender Weise überein.
