Summary
The equilibrium pressures exerted by linear polystyrene with hydrocarbon concentrations from zero to saturation are measured for ambient pressures from 0–19 physical atmospheres (atm) and temperatures from 20–250 °C. The heats of solution and mixing as well as the partial molar enthalpies of dilution, and the interaction parameters are determined from these measurements on the basis of thermodynamical relations. The heats of solution roughly equal the heats of condensation; the interaction parameters take values about 1.5 at room temperature. The behaviour of the miscibility gap, that is the dependence of the saturation solubility on temperature, changes its character at the critical temperature of the hydrocarbon and assumes the solubility behaviour as known for permanent gases in fluids.
