Abstract
The swelling of a series of sodium montmorillonite clays, and the thixotropy and gel strength of the clay sols, has been studied as a function of solids content, and the effects of varying pH, exchangeable sodium content, shape and size of the dispersed particles have been investigated.
The sol-gel transformation follows the kinetics of a sixth order reaction with respect to solids content; and the rate of gelation depends on the size and shape of the dispersed clay platelets. The optimum gel strength of heterocoagulated systems varies as the sixth power of the solids content (c), and of intrinsic viscosity [η]; and the strongest gels at constantc[η] values are obtained with systems of large well-formed platelets. Needles and fluffy particles lead to lower gel strengths.
A simple geometric model has been postulated to explain the experimental data, based on Hermans' hypothesis, that in thixotropic gels the strength of all the junction points is appreciably constant, and that the optimum gel strength depends mainly on the number of junction points.
