Summary
An apparatus is described which allows to measure the viscoelastic properties of polymer bars by means of the resonances of bending vibrations in a large range of temperatures and frequencies. The characteristics of construction are that
resonances, caused by mechanical contacts, are avoided.
the patterns are supported lying free on a damped material in the nods of vibration.
the samples are driven electro-magnetically and the resonance vibrations are registrated by symmetrically arranged pairs of coils.
Thus the vibrations of the bar are submitted to extremely small extern influences.
The viscoelastic behaviour of linear amorphous polymethylmethacrylate PMMA is measured in the frequency range 40...17000 c/s applying temperatures between −37° and + 140 °C, i. e. till 40° above the glass-temperature. The upper limit of frequency can be approached only by using higher modes of vibration, the upper limit of temperature only by inducing short, thick bars, which have a stability of shape also in the area of softening. To evaluate the measurements an “extended theory of bending vibrations of bars” is needed.
The real and imaginary parts of complexYoung's modulus and the damping factor of PMMA are plotted in dependence of temperature and frequency within the ranges mentioned. Besides that the temperature-depended density of the polymer has been determined exactly. The results are in good agreement with the ones of other authors; the measurements of the real partE′ are especially accurate.
