Summary

The liquid-liquid phase behaviour of solutions of multicomponent polymers in a single solvent can be described in detail with theFlory-Huggins theory. All phenomena, predicted by theory with the aid of numerical calculations, could be qualitatively verified by experiment. The relative positions of the coexistence curves depend on the overall polymer concentration in that their two branches get closer together as the polymer content of the system increases. Shadow curves may exhibit peculiar backward deflection. These effects arise from the presence of a molecular weight distribution in the polymer, the details of which are reflected in the shape of the various coexistence curves.
