Summary
By infrared spectroscopy of poly(ethylene oxides) in dilute solution it is shown that H-bonding exists between the terminal OH-groups and the oxygen atoms of the same chain. The ratio of intermolecularly associated and free OH-groups increases with increasing molecular weight, and varies from zero for ethylene glycol to nearly one for poly(ethylene oxide) 20000. This relationship is explained (theoretically) by the increasing concentration of the intramolecular oxygen atoms in the environment of the proton.
