Summary

ALiesegang system of phosphate diffusing into a gelatine gel containing calcium was investigated by electron microscopy and diffraction.

Besides sharply defined precipitation zones there occurred zones that were more diffuse, and electron microscopy showed that the crystals from the sharp zones were well developed, while the diffuse zones had badly developed crystals with much occluded material.

Electron diffraction, both single crystal and powder diagrams, showed that all crystals had identical structure, and closely similar to diffraction patterns of synthetic octocalcium phosphate.

Regions well in advance of the last precipitation zone showed presence of similar crystals, with more crystals in positions where rings were expected to form.
