Summary

In order to elucidate sorption mechanism of organic vapor by polyvinyl pyrrolidone (P.VP K-30, General Aniline & Film Co. product), isotherms for the sorption of methyl alcohol and ethyl alcohol vapors by P.V.P. were obtained. The mechanism was examined by applyingZimms cluster integral (4) andFlory, Huggins, andSimhas (5) theories to the isotherms. This shows that the 3 following mechanisms are involved:

  1. 1.

Sorption occurring at the free polar groups located on the surface and also in the loose packing regions.

  2. 2.

Sorption in which polar groups become exposed anew by the molecular motion of polymer which has been accelerated during the sorption process.

  3. 3.

Sorption in which the sorbate molecules get mixed more randomly with polymer, yielding the short-range orderliness more or less between polymer and sorbate molecules.
