Summary
After the substitution of the dietary lipids by corn oil respectively coconut oil for ten days, the fecal excretion of lipids and sterols decreases significantly. On the other hand the serum lipids show the well-known changes, produced by highly unsaturated, respectively by saturated fatty acids. After the application of corn oil, triglycerides and cholesterol are reduced, also the total lipids. Under treatment with conconut oil the total lipids increased in favour of triglycerides, phospholipids and total cholesterol.
Healthy infants were supplied with milk, containing 60% of saturated fatty acids with a chain-length of 8–12 C-atoms. The infants also showed a significantly decreased lipid- and sterol excretion with slightly increased serum lipids. As it is shown by TLC, the free and esterified sterols make 45–55% of the total lipids in adults, but only about 30% in infants.
Beside these both fractions were differently reduced by using specific neutral fats. Feeding corn oil, especially the excretion of free sterols is reduced, applying conconut oil or “V-milk” the excretion of esterified sterols is reduced.
According to these results, digestion and absorption are the most important parameters for enteral metabolism of cholesterol.
Gas-liquid-chromatographic results show an increasing cholestanol and cholesterol excretion in the corn-oil-group. One can say, that there is only a relative increase of cholesterol and a diminishued bacterial reduction to coprosterol, corresponding to the reduced excretion of total sterols. Similar changes cannot be seen after application of saturated fatty acids.
Our examinations have shown, according to results of other authors, that there is no direct correlation between serum cholesterol level and fecal sterol excretion.
Changes of the resorption of sterols as well as adaptation in the intermediate hepatic lipid-metabolism are mechanisms, influencing the fecal sterol excretion.
