Summary
Erythropoietin, renin, aldosterone, red cell mass, and plasma volume were assessed in 10 patients with primary and secondary polycythemia. The serum erythropoietin content was clearly elevated in one case of polycythemia vera, two cases of hypoxemia, and one case of liver carcinoma. —Plasma renin activity was within the normal range in all patients, but it increased excessively after upright posture and administration of saluretics. — Aldosterone excretion rates were decreased in 4 patients; the other values were normal. — Red cell mass was increased in all, while plasma volume was reduced in 7 patients. — The relationships between the parameters studied are discussed. It is suggested that renin, respectively aldosterone and the renal erythropoietic factor can be stimulated or depressed by different regulatory mechanisms.
