Summary
This study summarizes the examinations in m. glutaeus maximus, m. peronaeus, and biceps in 57 patients with disuse atrophy based on histochemical studies. The patients showed a remarkable loss of movement by coxarthrosis or kachexy. The quantitative analysis—analogous to our previous studies—showed a reduction of the fibre cross-sections in type I and type II muscle fibers, slightly predominant in type II-fibers. The most important result is the relative decrease of the number of type II-fibers in the cases of severe disuse atrophy. The relative number of type I-fibers and type II-fibers seems to depend on the function of the muscle. Important conclusions are possible; the study should be completed by an examination of muscle in to get specimens of hypertrophic muscles.
