Summary
The pattern of heme precursors of erythrocytes of human newborns was extensively analyzed for the first time. By means of determination of the essential intermediate and by-products of the hemesynthesis (proto- and coproporphyrin, Porphobilinogen, δ-aminolevulic acid) and comparative investigation of erythrocytes and plasma it was possible, to get a general view of the pattern of heme precursors of the blood of the newborn. The coproporphyrins I and III could constantly be proved chromatographically; in several chromatograms a pentacarboxylic porphyrin I from erythrocytes and plasma was present. Porphobilinogen and δ-aminolevulic acid were for the first time demonstrated in erythrocytes of the newborn as well as protoporphyrin and δ-aminolevulic acid in the plasma. The concentrations of heme precursors of the newborn are about 2 till 3 times higher than those of the adult. The connexions of heme precursors together and to the count of reticulocytes, especially coproporphyrin, is pointed out.
