Summary
Phytohaemagglutinin (PHA-P) was separated by ion exchange chromatography, absorption procedures, and isoelectric focusing. Two active fractions were obtained. One of them was homogenous by physico-chemical characterization. Both fractions showed lymphoagglutinating, mitogenic, and cytoaggression-inducing activity. In spite of varying isoelectric points, the biological properties were qualitatively identical. It was not possible to associate single properties to different fractions. In our preparation, the biological activity was related to protein and to the protein content of the fractions. From other experimental data, we think that the binding sites of the active molecule are represented by carbohydrates.
