Summary
Phytohemagglutinin is considered a maximal stimulus for the transformation of lymphocytes. In severely lymphopenic patients, the lymphocytes have been claimed to be non-responsive, i. e. these cells are considered qualitatively deficient.—Systematic study of a severely lymphopenic patient demonstrated that his lymphocytes are normally responsive to the phytohemagglutinin stimulus, provided the greatly disturbed relationship between granulocytes and lymphocytes is restored. Several possible explanations are discussed. It is most probable that during the short-time culture the granulocytes are destroyed, thus releasing their hydrolases into the culture medium and so inhibiting the lymphocytes.
