Summary
Calcium oxide, when being present in caustic (burned) magnesite as an injurious constituent, can be recognized with the help of a dyeing reaction which consists in a spot test made on the sample directly, by means of ammonium citrate and thymolphthalein. As a result, the grains of calcium oxide are dyed blue and can be counted.
