Summary
Phosgen can be converted to diphenyl carbazide by reacting with phenyl hydrazine cinnamate. The diphenyl carbazide formed gives red violet copper salts and can thus be recognised. It is possible to perform all these reactions as spot tests, the limit of identification being 0,5γ COCl2. This new method of detecting COCl2 can be successfully applied for testing chloroform and carbon tetrachloride for purity.
