Diagnosis of pneumocystic carinii pneumonia by lavage of the bronchial system

Summary

This report deals with a 10 year old girl suffering from an acute lymphoblastic leukemia since 1971. The child was hematologically in full remission, when she developed a pneumonia due to pneumocystis carinii.

The diagnosis was established by demonstrating the agent in bronchial secretions. The material was obtained by rinsing the bronchial system.

The patient was treated with pentamidine and co-trimoxazol (Bactrim®) with good success.

Zusammenfassung

Bericht über ein 10jähriges Kind, das 1971 an einer Leukämie erkrankt war. Während einer Vollremission entwikkelte es eine Pneumonie, die klinisch und röntgenologisch an eine Pneumocystis Carinii-Pneumonie denken ließ. Die Diagnose wurde durch eine Bronchialspülung mit Nachweis von Pneumocystis Carinii im Spülwasser gesichert. Das Kind wurde mit Pentamidin und Bactrim behandelt und geheilt.
