Summary

The formation of cytoplasmic vacuoles of neutrophilic granulocytes and monocytes after ingestion of latex particles dependent on inflammations of different etiology had been studied in vitro. The ingestion of latex particles as well as the formation of cytoplasmic vacuoles is increased by acute inflammations. As to neutrophilic granulocytes it could be shown that this increase is caused not only by an enhancement of the capacity of ingestion and the formation of vacuoles of the single cell but also by an increase in the cell percentage being involved in both reactions. The present study suggests that inflammatory processes stimulate ingestion and, secondarily, the formation of vacuoles.

Apart from the increase in the total leukocyte count and the change of distribution of the different kinds of leukocytes in the peripheral blood the increase in the ingestion capacity and the vacuoles formation represents a reaction in acute inflammation.
