Summary

After a brief review of the literature on chlorinated hydrocarbon residues in the total diet, own investigations are described. From September 1967 to June 1968 the chlorinated hydrocarbon contents of twenty complete daily menus have been investigated. A total of 79 meals has been examined among them some typically Hungarian dishes. The breakfast was composed according to household habits, the dinner and supper were canteen meals.

The investigation of the meal samples was carried out as follows: the sample was homogenized, extracted, cleaned up by acid treatment in an apparatus described byCzeglédi-Jankó andCieleszky (3). In the purified extract chlorinated hydrocarbon residues were assessed by gaschromatography using two columns and an electron capture detector. The results obtained by gaschromatography were in some instances confirmed by thin-layer chromatography.

In the total diet the mean values were 74 μg for alpha-BHC, 60 μg for beta-BHC, 112 μg for lindane, 10 μg for delta-BHC, 91 μg for DDT, 95 μg for DDE, and 79 μg for DDD, giving a total daily intake of about 510 Vg per capita.

The relatively high dietary intake of lindane in Hungary may be explained by recent restrictions in the use of DDT and the prohibition of cyclodienes, resulting in an increased agricultural application of lindane.

In 1967 the total chlorinated hydrocarbon content in the total diet in Hungary exceeded the amounts found in the USA in 1964, and in the UK in 1967.
