Non-linear effects in the study of structural phase transitions by birefringence measurements

Abstract

Birefringence measurements do not necessarily reveal the temperature dependence of the order parameter in structural phase transitions. Even in simple systems and even at temperatures very close to the transition, deviations from a linear relation between the morphic birefringence and the order parameter may be found. The linear parts of the contributions to the birefringence, resulting from different excitation mechanisms, may have different signs and thus may cancel. Then higher-order effects can be observed. A theoretical analysis and experimental examples are given.
