Abstract
We present a detailed comparison of theoretical results on 1sσ-ionization probabilities andδ-electron production rates with recent experimental data. The investigations are restricted to collisions of very heavy ions with (Z 1+Z 2)α≳1 below the Coulomb barrier. It is emphasized that first order time dependent perturbation theory is inapplicable for an accurate theoretical description of the measured data.
