Abstract
The tensor polarizabilities of the 6s 5d 1 D,3 D levels and the 5d6p 1 P,1 F,3 P and3 D states in barium, as well as differential scalar polarizabilities, have been measured using laser-atomic-beam spectroscopy. The measured values are compared with theoretical values derived from configuration interaction calculations of oscillator strengths. The lack of agreement underlines the need for more accurate calculations.
