First results of the operation of the arch dam of the Chirkey hydroelectric station

Hydrotechnical Construction Aims and scope

Conclusions

  1. 1.

The construction and technical decisions made when designing the dam provided its normal operation without any substantial difficulties.

  2. 2.

According to the data of on-site observations, the quality of construction works on the dam (concreting, grouting, etc.) is good on the whole.

  3. 3.

The state of the dam and its foundation under the total design loads is normal and on the whole corresponds to the design prediction. No anomalous phenomena were noted in the behavior of the dam. The state of the dam at present is safe.

  4. 4.

The functioning system monitoring the safety of the dam provides sufficient information for a valid assessment of its actual behavior and state.

  5. 5.

The use of an inclined turbine intake should be considered a successful design, but when duplicating this design it is necessary to take into account the considerations expressed concerning an increase of the reliability of its operation.

  6. 6.

Sealing off the deep sanitary outlets of high-head structures must be done immediately after the reservoir level rises to the intake sills of the units or surplusing works of high levels.

  7. 7.

When designing high arch dams special attention should be devoted to the development of vertical transportation systems, discharge of seepage waters, and provision of reliable natural ventilation of lower galleries and bank galleries.
